Chickahominy Corn & John Smith - The Godspeed Retraces a Journey of Survival: A port-of-call visit by the Jamestown Settlement Godspeed to River’s Rest Marina, 9100 Willcox Neck Road, to commemorate Capt. John Smith’s historic Chickahominy Voyages in November of 1607. Winter was coming on. The Jamestown settlers were short of supplies, and the second supply had failed to arrive. Capt. John Smith set out to explore the river and trade with the Chickahominy Indians. Hundreds of barrels of Chickahominy corn fed the settlement through its first winter. As Smith traveled further up river and into the heart of Indian lands he was taken prisoner and spent a month in captivity before his release and return to Jamestown.
