Ciarra My 5th great grandfather William Thomas was a free mulatto who was born in 1755. He served two terms of enlistment on the Continental line during the Revolutionary War. On his first term he was encamped at Williamsburg and at Valley Forge and fought in the Battle of Monmouth. On his second term he was a personal servant to Gen. Peter Muhlenberg, who commanded Continental forces in this area leading to the British surrender at Yorktown. My 3rd great grandfather Harris Miles was elected clerk of court in 1870, making him the first person of color to serve in local office. |
