ROACH | Benjamin F. | 14 MAR 1862 | Parker's Virginia Battery | Private. Age: 17. Present: MR #1-9. On 21 Nov 1862, Cpl. Lambeth was sent to Charles City Co., after Roach, who was listed as a deserter. Roach later had $3 deducted from his pay for the costs of chasing him down. The results of his court martial were reported by G. O. 57, 18 Apr 1863, ANV. The court found Roach guilty of being AWOL, rather than of desertion as charged. They ordered that he forfeit $10 per month for 6 mo. And submit to hard labor for 1 mo. Wearing a 12 lb. ball on a 3 ft. chain. The court declared itself "thus lenient in view of the youth and good character of the prisoner, and of his good conduct at the battle of Fredericksburg, as testified to by his captain." The labor senternce was later redirected to his battalion for enforcement. Hospitalized in Aug. 1862 for Rheumatism. Deserted again 2 Jul 1864. VSL shows Roach captured at Sayoler's Creek and taken to Pt. Lookout, but that is almost surely an error, possibly resulting from the weveral other members of the same surname.
